When I was growing up on a farm in the 60’s and 70’s, my parents raised horses. There were many days I’d saddle up and go for miles. Even alone. It was a great way to grow up with such freedom, time to dream, and discover the world around me.
My favorite thing was riding through woods as if I were discovering places never before seen. I found many a pond along the way. Some were for irrigation for crops so water there moved. Some were for fishing so that water moved with the life under the surface. But some ponds were just stagnant bodies of water. They smelled bad, looked bad, and probably tasted bad. Those ponds weren’t moving. There was no life under the surface.
I’ve met people like that, too, who know they can’t go back to the way things used to be, and they don’t seem to know how to go forward. Their lives grow stagnant, for while breathing, they aren’t really living. They need to find their way forward.
I’ve been there and am sure you have, too. The truth is we make the choices every day that determine our future. And even when we think we have no choice, we are choosing, just not getting the results we really want for ourselves.
The temptation is to believe you have no direction, no hope of going forward or changing your life. When we become still too long, that is when our lives get like the water in the pond and grows stinky and stagnant. You can change where you are, what you are currently experiencing.
You have God-given power to change and create. Andy Stanley, when he has trouble deciding the way forward, asks, “What would a great leader do?” And as Les Brown says, “You have greatness in you!”
Ask God to show you where your thinking is like a stagnant pond. He put greatness in you and you do have the creative power to change your life.
I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. (Isaiah 48:17)
I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. (Psalm 32:8)
And if you need someone to ride along the journey with you as you begin, I would be honored. You’re invited to sign up for my next local class:
